Guillemots (not the seabird), are the kind of band you either love to bits or find intensely annoying. Lets face it, they have bizarre screaming and wailing noises interspersed amongst the lyrics, an awkward and strangely dressed front man, 5 minute plus songs and the slightly pretentious use of a double bass. There is also the problem of being impossible to define by genre.
Having said all that, I really like them. I saw them supporting Rufus Wainwright last year and thought they were hypnotic. The awkward front man guy manages to come across as quite cool in a geeky way rather than being annoying, and although a couple of the tracks were overlong the rest were indie/poppy/alternativeness perfection.
Seriously, some of their work sounds AMAZING, I've been listening to them pretty much nonstop for the last few days and I'm not even nearly bored yet. I've got no idea what they are singing about half the time but who cares, it sounds beautiful.
I've got high expectations for this lot, amongst the patchy writing there are some real gems and I can't wait to see (or hear) how the album turns out.
